Chandrayaan Updates
Posted by emblica on November 9, 2008
- To Introduce with, Chandryaan was a two yr moon mission; was launched from Sriharikota on Oct 22nd… it will draw a 3D map of the moon, carrying out it’s chemical mapping and hunting for water/ice.
- India became the 5th member of the global moon club on saturday (8th Nov 08), with the craft entering the lunar orbit at 5.04 pm (IST)… Other four members are the US, Russia (former Soviet Union), Japan and China including the members of European Space Agency (ESA).
- The moon mission launcher, Dr. K. Kasturirangan said, the “Lunar Orbit Insertion” (LOI) was a nail-biting moment as the two objects – the moon and Chandrayaan – moving at a high speed had to have a successful rendezvous. At a certain point, the gravity of moon and that of Earth cancel out each other, making LOI very challenging.
- According to the ISRO officials, Chandrayaan’s liquid engine was fired for 817 seconds when the spacecraft passed at a distance of about 500 km from the moon to reduce its velocity to enable the lunar gravity to capture it around the moon. It’s speed was reduced to 366 m/s when it flew into the moon’s orbit.
- The signal to activate the liquid engine was flashed from the mission control room to chandrayaan that went via the deep space network at Byalalu.
- The spacecraft is now around the moon in an elliptical orbit that passes over its polar region. It takes about 11 hrs to go around the moon in this orbit.
- Further, the altitude of the spacecraft will be gradually reduced and the final orbit will be 100×100 km.
- Chandrayaan is carrying 11 instruments, of which six are from abroad – three from ESA, two from NASA, one from Bulgaria and five from India.
- Among the 11 scientific payloads, Bulgarian Experiment – Radom was activated on Oct 22 when the mission was launched. It took the Radiation Data which is already in place. Radom will assess the radiation Environment of the moon, which is expected to play a significant role when india decides on a manned lunar mission around 2020.
- Besides Radom, the indigenous Terrain Mapping Camera (Which will map the entire topography of the moon) and the hyper spectral imager (Which will provide information about minerals) have also been activated.
- The Remaining Experiments will be activated by Nov 20.
- It’s a significant feat; coz India’s moonshot was successful in the very first attempt – something that the US and Russia could not achieve!
